Hi! Let’s learn about that ray hiding in the sand. Rays are neat sea animals that look a little like flat kites or pancakes with eyes on top.

  1. What is a ray?
A ray is a fish with a flat body and wide, wing‑like sides. Some rays are called stingrays because they have a tail with a sharp part they use only if they are scared.
  2. Why does it hide in the sand?
    - To hide from bigger animals that might want to eat it (safety).
    - To stay hidden while it waits for little animals to eat for lunch (like crabs or tiny fish).
    - The sand makes the ray hard to see because its color matches the beach—this is called camouflage.
  3. How can it breathe and see while buried?
Rays have their eyes on top of their heads so they can peek out of the sand. Right behind their eyes are tiny holes called spiracles. They take in water through those holes to breathe while their mouth (and gills) stay under the sand.
  4. How does it move?
Rays use their big sides like wings. They can flap them up and down or make wavy motions to swim. Some dig into the sand a little with movements of their body and fins.

If you see one at the beach:

  • Stay calm and watch from a safe distance.
  • Tell an adult—do not touch it.
  • If you are wading in shallow water, shuffle your feet instead of stepping—this helps rays feel you and swim away so they won’t be surprised.

Fun fact: Rays are very good at hiding, but they don’t usually want to hurt people. They bury themselves to be safe and to hunt quietly. Watching one quietly from far away is a great way to learn about ocean animals!
