Weird Zebra Facts (for a 6-year-old!)

Hi! Zebras are like stripy horses. Here are some weird and fun facts about them. Read each one slowly and try the little activity at the end!

  1. Every zebra's stripes are different.

Just like your fingerprint is special, no two zebras have the same pattern of stripes. That helps mom zebras tell their babies apart.

  2. Are zebras black with white stripes or white with black stripes?

Scientists say zebras have dark skin and their white fur makes the stripes. It’s a silly question that makes zebras extra interesting!

  3. Stripes can confuse predators.

When many zebras run together, their stripes mix up and it’s harder for a lion to pick one zebra to chase. It’s like a moving stripy puzzle.

  4. Stripes may keep bugs away.

Some scientists found that biting flies don’t like landing on stripes. So the stripes might help zebras get fewer nasty bug bites.

  5. Baby zebras stand up very quickly.

A baby zebra (called a foal) can often stand and walk within an hour of being born. That helps them stay safe with the herd.

  6. Zebras make funny sounds.

They don’t neigh like horses. Zebras bray and bark—kind of like a donkey saying hello!

  7. They can run very fast.

Zebras can run faster than people. Running fast helps them escape from hungry animals.

  8. Zebras like to stand close to each other.

They groom each other with their teeth to keep clean and stay friends. It’s their way of saying, "You’re my buddy!"

Try this fun activity

  1. Grab paper and crayons.
  2. Draw a horse shape, then add stripes. Make each stripe different—just like real zebras!
  3. Ask an adult to hide a small toy behind a few stripes. Can you find it? Pretend the stripes are hiding the toy like they hide zebras!
