What are fireworks?

Fireworks are bright, colorful lights and loud bangs people use to celebrate. They are made of small packages of special powders and chemicals that burn and burst in the sky to make pretty shapes and colors.

How do they work? (Simple steps)

  1. Light the fuse: An adult lights a little rope called a fuse. The fuse burns slowly so the person can get away safely.
  2. Up they go: The firework shoots into the sky like a rocket.
  3. Burst in the sky: At the top it breaks open and sprays lots of tiny bits that glow. Those bits make the shiny stars and shapes you see.
  4. Colors: Different metals make different colors. For example, some chemicals make red, some make green, and some make blue.

Why do fireworks make noise?

When a firework explodes, air moves out very fast. That fast-moving air makes a big boom or crack sound. Bigger explosions usually make louder sounds.

Important safety rules (very important!)

  • Only grown-ups should light fireworks.
  • Watch from a safe distance and stay with an adult.
  • Never touch a firework that didn’t go off—tell an adult right away.
  • If the noise is too loud or scary, wear ear protectors or cover your ears.
  • Have water or a hose nearby so grown-ups can put out fires if needed.
  • Never point fireworks at people, animals, or houses.

Fun and safe ways to enjoy fireworks

Go to a public fireworks show with trained people who set them off. You can also watch fireworks on TV or videos with an adult if you don’t want to hear loud noises.

Remember: Fireworks are beautiful and exciting, but they must be handled only by adults so everyone stays safe.
