What is gunpowder?

Gunpowder is a special kind of powder that can burn very quickly and make a big puff of hot gas. When it burns fast, it can make a loud bang and push things away.

How do people use it?

  • Long ago, people used gunpowder in fireworks to make bright colors and loud sounds.
  • It was also used a long time ago in cannons and some kinds of tools to make big bangs — but that was done only by grown-ups who knew how to be very careful.

Why is gunpowder dangerous?

Gunpowder can make a big explosion and very hot fire. That can hurt people, start fires, or break things. Because it is dangerous, it must never be touched or played with by kids.

What should you do if you see it?

  • Don’t touch it.
  • Tell a grown-up right away.
  • Stay back and let the grown-up take care of it.

Safe things you can do instead

  • Watch fireworks from a safe distance with an adult.
  • Visit a museum to learn about old things like cannons in a safe way.
  • Play with toy rockets or science kits made for kids under adult supervision.

If you have more questions, ask a grown-up or your teacher — it’s great to be curious and to learn about how things work while staying safe!
