Weather — a simple guide for a 5-year-old
Weather is what the sky and air are like right now. It can be sunny, rainy, snowy, windy, or cloudy. Let’s learn what each one means and what to do!
What kinds of weather are there?
- Sunny — The sun is bright. It feels warm. Wear a hat and sunscreen.
- Rainy — Water falls from the sky. Use a raincoat and boots. Splash in puddles!
- Snowy — Little white flakes fall. Wear a warm coat, hat, gloves, and make a snowman.
- Windy — The air moves fast. Your hair might fly. Fly a kite when it is safe.
- Cloudy — The sky is covered with clouds. Sometimes it might rain next.
- Stormy (thunder and lightning) — Loud booms and bright flashes. Go inside and stay safe.
How to tell the weather — easy steps
- Look outside the window. Is the sun out or are there clouds?
- Listen. Do you hear rain or thunder?
- Feel the air on your skin. Is it warm or cold? Is the wind blowing?
- Ask a grown-up: they can check the weather on a phone or TV.
What to wear
- If it is sunny: light clothes, hat, and water to drink.
- If it is rainy: raincoat and boots.
- If it is cold or snowy: warm coat, hat, gloves, and boots.
- If it is windy: a jacket to keep your hair and clothes from flying.
Safety tips
- When you hear thunder or see lightning, go inside right away.
- If it is very hot, play in the shade and drink lots of water.
- When it is icy, walk slowly so you do not slip.
Fun things to do
- On rainy days: jump in puddles with boots and splash!
- On snowy days: build a snowman and make snow angels.
- On windy days: fly a kite or feel the wind on your face.
- On sunny days: play outside, but wear sunscreen and a hat.
Simple experiment: Make rain in a jar (with a grown-up)
- Put warm water in a clear jar until it is about one-third full.
- Cover the jar with a plate and put ice on the plate.
- Watch the jar. Water drops will form and fall like tiny rain—this shows how clouds make rain.
Enjoy watching the weather every day. Ask a grown-up to help you try the experiment and to keep you safe in storms. Have fun exploring!
