The United Kingdom — explained for a 5-year-old

The United Kingdom (we can call it the UK) is a group of four countries that live close together like a family. The four are:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland

They are all part of the UK, but each one has its own name and special things.

Where is the UK?

The UK is made of islands. Big island (Great Britain) has England, Scotland and Wales. A smaller part called Northern Ireland is on the island next to it. The UK is near other countries in Europe and is surrounded by the sea.

Capitals — big towns

  • England: London — big city with famous clock called Big Ben and red double-decker buses.
  • Scotland: Edinburgh — has an old castle on a hill.
  • Wales: Cardiff — has castles and pretty hills.
  • Northern Ireland: Belfast — known for shipbuilding long ago.

The flag

The UK flag is called the Union Jack. It has red, white and blue lines all crossed together.

People and languages

Many people in the UK speak English. Some also speak Welsh in Wales and Gaelic in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Fun things you might see

  • Lots of green hills and castles.
  • Many sheep in the countryside.
  • Big red buses and black taxis in the cities.
  • Sometimes it rains, so people often carry umbrellas.

A little activity

You can draw the UK like a family of four. Draw four small houses and write the country names: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Then draw a red, white and blue flag!

That is the UK — four places that are friends and make one country together.
