Temperature — for a 5‑year‑old

Temperature is a word that tells us how hot or cold something is.

How you can see and feel temperature

  • When you touch a fresh cookie it feels hot.
  • When you touch an ice cube it feels cold.
  • When your drink is not hot or cold, it feels just right.

Fun, safe experiment (ask an adult to help)

  1. Get three cups: one with ice water, one with room temperature water, one with warm water (not hot!).
  2. Put one finger in each cup for one second. Say: "cold", "just right", or "warm".
  3. Talk about which one was your favorite and why.

What a thermometer does

A thermometer is like a little ruler for hot and cold. The line or numbers move up when something gets hotter and move down when it gets colder. An adult can show you how it works.

Your body and temperature

Your body likes to feel warm and cozy. If your head or body feels very hot, tell an adult — they might check your temperature with a thermometer. If you feel cold, putting on a sweater or blanket helps.

Safety rules

  • Never touch a stove, oven, or kettle — they can be very hot. Always ask an adult.
  • Let an adult use thermometers that go in the mouth, ear, or on the skin.

Short song to remember

"Hot and cold, hot and cold — tell an adult if you feel too bold. Cozy warm or chilly breeze, put on a coat or take off sleeves!"

Done! Now you know what temperature means. Want to try the warm/cold cup game right now with an adult?
