Diwali — a very happy festival

Diwali is a special day when families put lots of little lights and candles around the house. It is a time for joy, sweets, color, and being with family.

What is Diwali? (Very simple)

Long ago, a brave prince named Rama came home after doing something good. People were so happy they lit lamps to show the way and to celebrate light winning over darkness.

How we celebrate — easy steps

  1. We light small lamps or safe LED lights to make the house bright.
  2. We decorate the floor with pretty colors called rangoli or with stickers and paper shapes.
  3. We wear nice clothes and hug family and friends.
  4. We share sweets and yummy treats.
  5. We sometimes see little fireworks — but only with grown-ups and with great care.

Fun and safe craft: Make a pretend paper diya

  1. Take a small circle of colored paper (a plate or cup can help draw it).
  2. Fold the circle into a shallow cone to look like a little lamp and glue the edge.
  3. Cut a small flame shape from yellow or orange paper and glue it inside the top of the cone.
  4. Put a tiny LED tea light next to your paper diya so it looks like it is glowing.
  5. Use crayons or stickers to decorate around the diya.

Short, 2-line Diwali story you can hear

Rama came home after helping people. Everyone lit lamps so his way was bright and everyone was happy.

Little Diwali rhyme

Lights are shining, bright and clear,
Diwali time for joy and cheer!

Safety tips for grown-ups

  • Never let a child play with real candles or fireworks alone.
  • Use LED lights or supervised tealights instead of open flames near curtains or paper.
  • If using sparklers or fireworks, have an adult hold them, keep water nearby, and wear shoes.
  • Check sweets for nuts or ingredients if a child has allergies.

Have fun making lights, colors, and yummy treats with your family. Happy Diwali!
