What is Christmas?

Christmas is a happy day many families celebrate. Some people celebrate because it is Jesus' birthday. Many people also celebrate with a big tree, bright lights, songs, and special treats. Santa Claus is a friendly man in a red suit who brings presents for children in many stories.

Things you might see

  • A Christmas tree with lights and decorations
  • Stockings hung by the fireplace
  • Santa and his reindeer in decorations and stories
  • Gifts wrapped in colorful paper
  • People singing cheerful songs

How to enjoy Christmas (easy steps)

  1. Look at the lights. Count the sparkly bulbs together.
  2. Decorate: help hang a safe ornament on the tree with an adult.
  3. Sing a short song together (see one below).
  4. Make a drawing or card for someone you love.
  5. Read a short Christmas story with a grown-up before bed.

Simple craft: Paper ornament

Materials: paper, crayons, child-safe scissors, tape or glue, string, and an adult to help.

  1. Fold a paper in half and draw a big shape (circle or star).
  2. Ask an adult to cut it out.
  3. Color and decorate the cut-out with crayons or stickers.
  4. Make a small hole with an adult and put a string to hang on the tree.

Safety tips for grown-ups

  • Keep small decorations out of reach of very young children.
  • Only use child-safe scissors and supervise cutting and gluing.
  • Turn off tree lights when no one is watching or sleeping.
  • Check for food allergies before sharing cookies or treats.

A short Christmas song (sing slowly)

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way!
Oh what fun to ride and sing on a sleigh today!

Have fun, sing loud, and enjoy cozy time with family!
