Fun Pelican Facts!

Hi! These are easy and silly pelican facts for kids age 4.

• Pelicans have a big pouch under their beak. It looks like a bag for fish!
• They scoop up water and fish in that pouch, then tip out the water and eat the fish.
• Some pelicans dive from the sky into the water to catch fish — big splash!
• The pouch can stretch a lot. It can hold many fish at once.
• Pelicans can float on water like a little boat because they have air pockets in their bodies.
• They sometimes fly in a line or a V-shape, like a bird train.
• Pelicans shake their pouch to get water out — it looks funny when they wobble.
• Baby pelicans are fluffy and look like soft pillows.

Try This!

1. Put your hands under your chin like a big pouch. Pretend to scoop up fish!
2. Wobble your hands like the pelican shaking its pouch to get the water out.
3. Flap your arms gently like pelican wings and pretend to fly (carefully).

Draw a pelican: start with a round body, a very big beak, and a big pouch under the beak. Color it and give your pelican a silly smile. Have fun!
