The Pelican's Big Pouch
Pelicans have a huge stretchy skin bag under their beak called a pouch (scientists call it a gular pouch). It helps them in lots of helpful and clever ways!
How the pouch works — step by step
- See the fish: The pelican spots fish swimming near the water.
- Scoop with the beak: The pelican opens its big beak and scoops water and fish into the pouch like a big net.
- Drain the water: The pouch lets the water run out while keeping the fish inside. Then the pelican swallows the fish.
Other cool jobs the pouch does
- Fishing net: It catches lots of fish at once—like a net full of fish.
- Holding food: The pelican can carry fish in the pouch to eat later or to feed its chicks.
- Cooling off: When it is hot, the pelican can flutter the skin of the pouch to cool down, like a little fan.
- Stretchy and strong: The pouch can stretch a lot so it can hold many fish and water without popping.
- Pretty colors: Sometimes the pouch gets bright colors when pelicans are trying to find a mate.
Try this fun pretend activity
Take a small plastic bag (grown-up help) and some small toys or rolled-up socks. Pretend the bag is a pelican pouch. Scoop up a few toys from a shallow tray of water (or from the floor) and then tip the bag to let the water drain out. You just did what a pelican does!
Isn’t that a neat pouch? It helps pelicans catch food, carry it, and stay cool—all with one stretchy beak bag!
