Why do hippos spin their tails and throw poop?
Hippos do something that looks funny to us: when they poop in the water or on the riverbank, they move their tails back and forth. The tail helps splash and spread the poop so the smell goes farther.
- Hippo goes to the water or the edge of the river.
- It poops while moving its tail like a little fan.
- The tail splashes the poop and spreads the smell around.
- Other hippos smell it and know this is that hippo's spot.
Why they do it: Animals like hippos use smells to "talk." Spreading the poop helps them mark their home and tell other hippos where they were.
Is it gross? Maybe a little, but it’s natural for animals. It’s their way of talking.
Important safety note: Hippos are very big and can be dangerous. Never go near a hippo — always watch them from far away with an adult.
Fun fact: Hippos live in rivers and lakes and are much faster than they look — they can run on land and swim in water!
