Hi! Let’s learn the sounds bunnies make

Bunnies talk with sounds. Each sound can tell you how the bunny feels. Listen and be gentle.

  • Thump — a big foot stamp: "thump!"
Means the bunny is warning others or is scared. Give it space.
  • Purr (soft teeth grinding) — a little rumble made with their teeth.
This usually means the bunny is calm and happy, like a kitty purr.
  • Loud teeth grinding — a sharp, grating sound.
This can mean the bunny is hurt or in pain. Tell an adult right away.
  • Squeak or grunt — small sounds like "eep" or "honk".
Usually the bunny is curious, excited, or a bit annoyed.
  • Growl or hiss — a "grr" sound.
The bunny is upset and wants to be left alone.
  • Scream — a very loud, high sound.
This means the bunny is very scared or hurt. Find a grown-up fast.
  • Sniffing — soft nose sounds.
The bunny is exploring and smelling things around it.

How to listen safely

  1. Be very quiet and sit down so you don’t scare the bunny.
  2. Watch from a little way away — do not grab or chase it.
  3. If you hear a scary sound (growl or scream), tell a grown-up right away.

Fun game: Try a one-minute listening game. Sit quietly and see which bunny sounds you can hear. Remember: always be kind and gentle with bunnies!
