Lions Live in Groups!

Yes — lions are the only big cats that really live together in a family group. Their group is called a "pride." A pride is like a lion family that lives and works together.

Who is in a pride?

  • Several lionesses (girl lions) who are often sisters or moms.
  • Their cubs (baby lions).
  • One or a few male lions that help protect the pride.

What do they do together?

  • Hunt: Lionesses often hunt together to catch big animals like zebras.
  • Take care of cubs: The moms help each other feed and watch the babies.
  • Protect their home: The males roar and chase away other lions.

Why are lions different from other big cats?

Most other big cats, like tigers, leopards, and jaguars, like to live alone. That is because:

  • They hunt alone and eat animals that are smaller or spread out.
  • They do not need a big group to protect babies or catch food.

Sometimes small wild cats or pet cats can live near each other if there is lots of food, and cheetah brothers can be friends and stay together. But lions are the ones that make a true family group called a pride.

Quick recap

Lions are special because they live in prides. They hunt, play, and protect each other. Most other big cats usually live by themselves.
