Here is a short, simple way to understand hearing:

  1. Sound goes into the outer ear like a funnel.
  2. It makes the eardrum move, and tiny bones in the middle ear shake.
  3. Those shakes go into the snail-shaped cochlea inside the ear.
  4. Nerves send messages from the cochlea to the brain that say what the sound is.
