Hi! Let’s learn about goosebumps

What are goosebumps?
A goosebump is a tiny raised dot on your skin that looks like little bumps. They happen when the tiny hairs on your skin stand up a little.

Why do goosebumps happen?

  1. Because you get cold. When your body feels cold, it makes the hairs stand up to keep you warmer. It is like when you put on a sweater.
  2. Because you feel strong feelings. If you feel scared, surprised, excited, or hear a beautiful song, your body can make goosebumps too. It is your body’s quick reaction to those feelings.

How it works (a very simple idea)
Under your skin are tiny muscles next to each hair. When those muscles tighten, the hair stands up and a little bump appears. You can say the muscles are giving your hairs a tiny little push.

Try a quick experiment

  1. Go to a cool room or stand near a window with a little breeze. Wait a moment and feel your arms.
  2. If you get goosebumps, rub your arm gently and the bumps will go away.
  3. You can also think of a tiny spooky story (only if you like) and see if that makes them appear. If it makes you too scared, stop and tell an adult.

When to tell an adult
If your skin hurts, has red spots, if you feel very cold and shivery, or if anything about your skin worries you, tell a parent or teacher. Most goosebumps are normal and go away by themselves.

Quick summary
Goosebumps are tiny bumps made when little muscles near your hairs make the hairs stand up. They happen when you are cold or feel strong emotions. They are usually normal and go away soon.
