Headphone Safety for You!
Headphones are fun, but loud noises and germs can make your ears unhappy. Here are simple steps you and a grown-up can follow.
Why we must be careful
- Loud sounds hurt ears: Very loud music can make ears sore, make you hear ringing, or make it hard to hear later.
- Germs can spread: Putting headphones on someone else can share germs and make ears itchy or infected.
Easy rules to keep ears happy
- Turn the volume down: Ask a grown-up to set the maximum. A good rule is about 6 out of 10 on the volume. If you can’t hear people near you, it’s too loud.
- Limit listening time: Try to listen for no more than 1 hour at a time. Take breaks so your ears can rest.
- Don't share without cleaning: If you share, wipe the ear pads first or use your own cushions. Ask a grown-up to help clean them with a soft cloth or wipe.
- Keep hands and headphones clean: Wash your hands before using them and keep headphones in a pouch or box when you’re not using them.
- Use kid-safe headphones: Ask a grown-up to buy headphones for kids that limit how loud they can go.
If your ears hurt or ring
- Stop using the headphones right away.
- Tell a grown-up.
- If your ear still hurts, feels full, or you hear ringing a lot, see a doctor.
Remember: be kind to your ears, take breaks, and keep things clean. That way headphones stay fun!
