What is a black lemur?

The black lemur is a special animal that looks a little like a squirrel and a little like a monkey. It lives in Madagascar, an island far away. There are not many black lemurs left — that means they are "super rare."

Why could they disappear forever?

  1. Trees are being cut down. Black lemurs live in trees. When people cut the trees, the lemurs lose their homes and food.
  2. People sometimes catch them. Some people take lemurs to keep as pets or hunt them. That makes fewer lemurs in the wild.
  3. There are only a few left. When there are very few animals, it is easier for the whole kind to disappear.

If all the black lemurs die or are gone, we say they have gone "extinct." That means there are no more black lemurs anywhere — not in the forest, not in zoos, nowhere. That would be very sad.

How you can help (things a kid can do)

  1. Learn and tell others. Tell your family, friends, and teacher about black lemurs. When more people know, more people can help.
  2. Dont have wild animals as pets. Say no to petting or buying wild animals — they belong in the wild.
  3. Draw and share. Make a picture of a black lemur and give it to a grown-up. Ask them to learn more with you or to help a conservation group.
  4. Help the Earth. Things like planting a tree, recycling, and saving energy help nature — and that helps many animals.
  5. Visit a safe zoo or read books. Seeing pictures or learning about lemurs helps you love them and want to protect them.

Many people and groups are working to save black lemurs. Even small actions from kids can help because they make grown-ups care and act. You can be a lemur helper!
