Hello! Let’s Learn About Clocks (for a 7-year-old)
We will learn what a clock is, what the hands do, and how to read the time. Follow the steps and try the practice games at the end!
1. Parts of an Analog Clock
- Face: The round part with numbers 1 to 12.
- Hour hand: The short hand. It shows the hour.
- Minute hand: The long hand. It shows minutes (how many minutes past the hour).
- Second hand: A thin hand that moves fast (counts seconds). We don’t always need it to tell time.
2. Reading the Hour
Look at the short (hour) hand. The number it points to or is almost pointing to is the hour.
Example: If the short hand points to 3, it is 3 o’clock (3:00).
3. Reading the Minutes
Look at the long (minute) hand. The numbers 1–12 also tell minutes. Each number = 5 minutes.
- 1 = 5 minutes, 2 = 10 minutes, 3 = 15 minutes, 4 = 20 minutes, 5 = 25 minutes, 6 = 30 minutes
- 7 = 35 minutes, 8 = 40 minutes, 9 = 45 minutes, 10 = 50 minutes, 11 = 55 minutes, 12 = 60 or 0 minutes
Say the minute number as minutes past the hour. Example: minute hand on 3 → 15 minutes → "quarter past" the hour.
4. Common Phrases
- o’clock = exactly the hour (e.g., 4:00)
- half past = 30 minutes past (e.g., 4:30)
- quarter past = 15 minutes past (e.g., 4:15)
- quarter to = 15 minutes before the next hour (e.g., 4:45 is quarter to 5)
5. Steps to Tell Time (Short and Simple)
- Look at the short hand to find the hour.
- Look at the long hand. Count by 5s to the number it points to for minutes (or remember the list above).
- Put them together: hour : minutes. Say AM or PM if you need to know morning or afternoon.
6. Digital Clocks
A digital clock shows time with numbers, like 7:20 or 3:45. The first number is the hour, the second is minutes.
7. AM and PM
- AM = morning (from midnight to noon).
- PM = afternoon and evening (from noon to midnight).
8. Make a Practice Paper Clock (Fun Activity)
- Draw a big circle. Write 1–12 around it like a clock.
- Cut out two arrows from paper: a short one for the hour and a long one for the minute. Pin them in the middle with a paper fastener so they can move.
- Move the hands and practice saying the time out loud.
9. Practice Problems (Try them!)
- Short hand on 6, long hand on 12. What time is it?
- Short hand a little after 2, long hand on 6. What time is it?
- Short hand almost at 9, long hand on 9. What time is it?
- Digital: 7:30 — what is this on an analog clock?
10. Answers to Practice
- 6:00 (six o’clock).
- 2:30 (half past two).
- 8:45 (quarter to nine).
- 7:30 = short hand between 7 and 8, long hand on 6 (half past seven).
Tips and Games
- Play "What’s the time, Mr. Wolf?" with a grown-up (great for practice).
- Set a timer for 10 minutes and try to draw the clock showing that many minutes past an hour.
- Ask family members, "What time is it now?" and check the clock together.
Great job! Keep practicing with your paper clock or a real clock. Soon you will read time super fast!
