Meerkats are small animals that live in dry places. Saying they are "social butterflies" means they love being with their family and friends. Meerkats do lots of things together to stay safe and happy.

  1. Big family groups: Meerkats live in groups called mobs or clans. A group can be about 5 to 30 meerkats. They sleep, eat, and play together.
  2. Home — burrows: The family lives in a big hole in the ground called a burrow. The burrow has many rooms and tunnels where they rest and hide from danger.
  3. Different jobs for everyone:
    • Some meerkats are babysitters who look after the pups while others hunt.
    • One or two act as lookouts or sentries. They stand on their back legs on a rock and watch for birds or other danger.
    • Many meerkats help dig, groom each other, and bring food back for the little ones.
  4. Helping and teaching pups: Adults teach the pups how to find food, dig, and stay safe. If a pup finds a big or dangerous bug, an adult helps show how to eat it safely.
  5. Keeping everyone safe: If the lookout spots a hawk or a jackal, it makes a special alarm call. Then all the meerkats run back to the burrow quickly to hide.
  6. Why living together helps: When meerkats live in a group they have more eyes to watch for danger, more hands to care for babies, and more friends to share food and play with.

Fun fact: Meerkats can stand on their back legs to get a better view. You can pretend to be a meerkat: stand on a small rock or step and be the lookout while your friends play.
