Above and Below the Ground — Playful Rephrases

Try saying it like a game: "Sky Friends and Soil Friends," or "Up-Top and Down-Under," or "Sun-Face and Dirt-Face!"

What it means (step by step)

  • Above the ground = everything you see up high: trees, birds, clouds, houses, and flowers' leaves. It’s the place where things reach for the sun.
  • Below the ground = the secret world under your feet: roots, worms, insects, buried seeds, and soil. It’s where plants drink water and find food.
  • They work together: Roots below hold the plant and send food up. Leaves above make food with sunlight and send some down to the roots.

3 Playful Ways to Explore Above and Below

  1. Backyard detective walk

What you need: a small magnifying glass (optional) and a paper bag or jar.

How to play: Walk outside and point to "up-top" things (birds, clouds, tree leaves). Then peek under leaves, lift a rock gently or dig a tiny hole to find "down-under" things (worms, roots). Say "hello" to a Sky Friend and a Soil Friend for each find. Always put things back gently.

  2. Clear-cup seed watch

What you need: a clear plastic cup, paper towel, a few seeds (bean seeds work great), and water.

How to play: Line the cup with a damp paper towel, tuck a seed between the paper towel and the cup wall so you can see it. Keep it damp and watch every day. You will see the root grow down (below) and the shoot grow up (above). Draw a picture of what you see each day.

  3. Above or Below sorting game

What you need: two boxes or circles on the floor labeled "Above" and "Below," and a pile of small toy items or picture cards (bird, rock, flower, worm, cloud, root, etc.).

How to play: Pick a card or toy, shout the name, and run to put it in the right box. Cheer when you get it right! Talk about why each thing goes above or below.

Have fun being a ground explorer! Remember to be gentle with plants and animals you find.
