Below are the AGLC4 rules you need and worked examples for both books. If you do not have the exact publisher, edition or year for the copy you used, replace the placeholders with the details from your book's title page and verso (copyright page).

AGLC4 basic bibliography format for a book:

Author's full name, Title (edition, Publisher Year).

Notes:

  • Use the author name as normally written (given name then family name).
  • Italicise the book title.
  • If it is the first edition, you may omit the edition; otherwise include it as e.g. '2nd ed'.
  • Place publisher and year in parentheses, separated by a comma.
  • Order bibliography entries alphabetically by authors' surnames.

Templates for your two items

Alan Garner, The Owl Service (edition, Publisher Year).

Caitlin Matthews, King Arthur and the Goddess of the Land (edition, Publisher Year).

Hypothetical examples (replace with your edition's details)

Example if you used a first edition or a specific reprint — check your title page/verso and replace publisher/year:

Alan Garner, The Owl Service (Bodley Head 1967).

Caitlin Matthews, King Arthur and the Goddess of the Land (Element 1998).

Example if you used a later paperback reissue (again, verify your copy):

Alan Garner, The Owl Service (Puffin Books 2002).

Caitlin Matthews, King Arthur and the Goddess of the Land (Thorsons/Element 1999).

Special cases

  • If the book has an editor rather than an author: Editor Name (ed), Title (Publisher Year).
  • If the book is translated: Author, Title (Translator Name trans, Publisher Year).
  • If there are multiple authors: First Author and Second Author, Title (Publisher Year).

Checklist before finalising your bibliography

  • Confirm exact spelling of authors' names (including accents) as they appear in the book.
  • Confirm the edition statement (eg '2nd ed') and include it if not first.
  • Confirm the publisher name and the year shown on the copyright page (verso).
  • Order entries alphabetically by surname.
  • Use consistent punctuation and formatting throughout the bibliography.

If you want, tell me the exact edition, publisher and year of each copy you used and I will produce the final AGLC4-formatted bibliography entries for you.
