Hi! Let's learn why they don't get burned.

Fennec foxes and jerboas live in the hot desert. Their paw bottoms are furry, and that helps them walk on hot sand. Here is how — step by step, like a little story:

  1. Fur is like tiny socks or an oven mitt. The fur on their paws traps little pockets of air. Air keeps heat from moving quickly, so the hot sand can't burn their feet as fast. It's like wearing socks when the ground is hot.
  2. Fur gives a soft cushion and protection. The furry bottoms stop sharp sand bits from hurting their paws and help them grip the sand so they don't slip.
  3. Big feet help too. Fennec foxes and jerboas have wide feet. Wide feet spread their weight so they don’t sink into the hot sand. When you spread weight, less heat pushes up on one spot.
  4. They are mostly awake at night. The desert is cooler at night, so they walk when the sand is not as hot. Walking at night keeps them comfortable.
  5. They hide in burrows during the day. When it’s hottest, they stay in underground homes (burrows) where it’s cool and safe until evening.

So, furry paws + big feet + nighttime walks + burrows = safe feet on hot sand!

Fun tip: Don’t try walking barefoot on very hot sand — try wearing shoes or socks instead, just like the animals use their furry "socks."
