The Battle of the Somme took place during World War I, from July 1 to November 18, 1916. It was fought between the British and French armies against the German forces. The battle was very important and many people fought in it.

Imagine a big soccer field. On one side of the field, you have the British and French teams, and on the other side, you have the German team. They wanted to try to win the big trophy, which was an important area of land in France.

Before the big game, the British and French teams planned to shoot lots of soccer balls (or what they called artillery shells) towards the German team's side of the field. This was to weaken the German team and make it easier for the British and French teams to move forward.

On the day of the big game, the British and French teams tried to kick the ball and run towards the German team to take over the important area of land. But it was really hard because the German team had good defenses and was very strong. The referee blew the whistle after many months, and the game ended without a clear winner. Many players from all the teams got hurt or had to leave the field because of the fighting.

In the end, the British and French teams didn't fully win the big trophy, but the German team had to move back, which was a little victory for the British and French. The Battle of the Somme was a really tough time for all the players, and many people remember it because so many were affected by it.
