What are "therians"?
There are three different things people might mean when they say "therians." I'll explain all three in simple steps so you can understand each meaning.
1) Theria — a group of mammals (science)
In science, "Theria" is the name for a big group of mammals. These are animals that usually have fur, make milk for their babies, and are warm-blooded. Theria includes two main kinds:
- Placentals — most mammals you know, like dogs, cats, elephants, and humans. Babies grow inside the mother with a placenta.
- Marsupials — animals like kangaroos and koalas. Their babies are born very tiny and usually grow in a pouch.
There are also mammals not in Theria, like the platypus and echidna. Those are called monotremes and they lay eggs.
How to tell a therian mammal (simple rules)
- Has fur or hair.
- Makes milk for its babies (mammary glands).
- Is warm-blooded (keeps its body temperature steady).
2) Therianthropes — old stories and myths
Long ago and in many stories, people told tales about humans who could change into animals or had animal parts. These characters are called therianthropes. A famous example is the werewolf — a person who turns into a wolf in stories. These are myths and parts of folklore and fiction.
3) "Therians" as people who feel like animals (a modern meaning)
Some people today use the word "therian" to say they feel a strong connection to a particular animal. They might feel like their inner self is more like an animal, or they might strongly identify with the animal's behavior or instincts. This is about feelings and identity — it doesn't mean they actually turn into animals. It's about imagination, feelings, and how someone understands themselves.
Quick facts and examples
- Example of a therian mammal: a human is a placental (part of Theria).
- Example of a marsupial: a kangaroo (baby grows in a pouch).
- Example of a myth: werewolves are therianthropes from stories.
- Modern use: someone who says, "I'm a wolf therian" means they feel like a wolf inside, not that they turn into one.
Try this activity
Pick an animal you like and draw it. Then write three things that make that animal special (how it looks, how it moves, where it lives). This helps you see why someone might feel close to that animal.
Summary
"Therians" can mean: (1) a scientific group of mammals (Theria), (2) characters in myths who change into animals (therianthropes), or (3) people who feel strongly connected to an animal. All three meanings are different, but each one helps us learn about animals, stories, and how people feel.
If you want, tell me one animal you like and I can explain which of these meanings fits best for that animal or give a fun fact about it!
