You will learn medieval history to 1066 in one focused week. No excuses. Learning goals (ACARA v9): explain collapse and continuity after Rome, describe power structures (kings, lords, church), analyse primary sources, and evaluate cause/effect. Skills targeted: chronology, source analysis, historical empathy, evidence-based argument. Success criteria: accurate timeline, two source analyses, and a persuasive group briefing.

  • Day 1 — Foundations (90 min): Direct teach on Roman decline and the so-called Dark Ages. Read short DK overview and R. W. Southern extract. Class task: create a 400–1066 timeline. Homework: read Asnapium estate inventory (Fordham source).
  • Day 2 — Power & Society: Feudal relationships, kingship, role of Church. Use Humanitas excerpts and Making of the Middle Ages. Activity: role-play lord–peasant negotiations; exit ticket: three evidence-based claims.
  • Day 3 — Material Culture & Castles: Watch David Macaulay Castle clip; examine Alan Lee & David Day visuals. Practical: annotate castle plan; link design to defence/social order. Extension sources: Musée de Cluny embroidery, Medieval Art resources.
  • Day 4 — Contacts & Conflict: Vikings, Anglo‑Saxons, Normans to 1066. Use Post‑Roman Kingdoms and Time Team episodes. Group task: compare two accounts of 1066 and prepare a 5-minute argumentative briefing.
  • Day 5 — Assessment & Reflection: Short assessed source analysis (500 words) and 4‑slide group presentation. Use rubric: accuracy, use of evidence, analysis, clarity. Feed forward and consolidation reading suggestions (Natalie Zemon Davis, Eleanor Janega).

Differentiation: scaffolded source packets, role adjustments for mixed-ability groups, extension tasks (primary-source challenge). Cross-curriculum: drama for role-play, art for manuscript study, ICT for timelines. Resources from the list will be used selectively: DK, Humanitas, Time Team, Macaulay, Post‑Roman Kingdoms, Musée de Cluny, R. W. Southern.

Classroom expectations: deadlines met, evidence cited, active participation. I expect disciplined preparation and tidy work. Parents: ensure reading is done. You will work hard. I will not accept sloppy thinking. Meet the standard.
