What is a saiga?
A saiga is a kind of antelope that lives on big flat lands called steppes in places that can be very cold and very dusty. It has a funny, big nose that looks a bit like a trunk.
Why is the nose special?
- Step 1 — Warming the cold air: When the saiga breathes in, the air can be freezing. Inside the saiga's nose there are many blood vessels and lots of folds. The warm blood in those vessels warms the air before it goes to the lungs. It is like a tiny heater for the air so the saiga's lungs do not get too cold.
- Step 2 — Trapping dust: The saiga's nose has hairs, folds, and sticky mucus. Dust in the air gets caught on the hairs and in the mucus so less dust reaches the lungs. It works a bit like a filter.
Why does this help the saiga?
- Warming the air keeps the saiga healthy in winter so it does not lose too much heat.
- Trapping dust keeps the lungs clean and lets the saiga breathe better when the ground is dry and dusty.
Easy things you can try
1) Put your hand in front of your mouth and breathe out. You feel warm air — that shows how animals warm the air. 2) Look at your nose hairs in a mirror — they help catch things so they don't go into your lungs, like the saiga's nose.
Quick fact: The saiga's nose is like a built-in scarf and a little filter all at once!
