How ospreys grab fish — step by step

Ospreys are birds that eat mostly fish. They are very good at catching fish right out of the water. Here is how they do it, in easy steps:

  1. Spot the fish: Ospreys can see very well. From high in the air they look down and find a fish swimming near the top of the water.
  2. Hover or circle: Sometimes the osprey hovers (stays in one place in the air) or flies in a circle so it can aim carefully.
  3. Dive feet-first: When it is ready, the osprey dives feet-first toward the fish. It hits the water with its feet and talons first.
  4. Grab the fish: Ospreys have long, curved talons that hook into the fish. They also have spiky pads on their feet that help them hold on so the fish doesn’t slip.
  5. Use a special toe: An osprey can move one of its toes so it has two toes in front and two behind. This gives a stronger grip on the fish.
  6. Fly away and eat: After catching the fish, the osprey flies back to a perch or its nest. It usually turns the fish so the head points forward — this makes flying easier — and then eats it.

Special osprey tools

  • Excellent eyesight — they can see fish from high up.
  • Curved talons — like hooks to hold slippery fish.
  • Spiky foot pads — help stop the fish from sliding away.
  • Reversible toe — lets them grip with two toes in front and two behind.
  • Closeable nostrils — they can shut them when they hit the water so no water goes in.

Fun facts

  • Ospreys can dive from 10–30 meters (about 30–100 feet) high!
  • They catch fish that weigh as much as themselves sometimes.

Try this at home

Watch a short video of an osprey fishing with an adult. Or draw an osprey showing its big feet and curved talons. Remember: never try to get too close to wild birds — watch from far away so you don’t scare them.
