Sea turtles are old — what that means

When people say "sea turtles are old," they can mean two different things. I'll explain both in a simple way.

  1. The species are ancient. Sea turtles have been around for about 110 million years. That means their relatives swam in the oceans when dinosaurs were alive. Scientists know this because they find fossils — old turtle bones and shells — in rocks.
  2. Individual sea turtles can live a long time. Many sea turtles grow up to live 50 years or more. Some turtles may even live close to 100 years. That is much older than most people will ever be.

How scientists learn turtle ages: They study fossils and old bones, and they watch turtles for many years. Sometimes they look at marks on shells or bones that are a bit like tree rings. All these clues help them guess how old turtles or turtle groups are.

Why this matters: Even though sea turtles are ancient and can live a long time, many kinds of sea turtles are in danger now. People can help by keeping beaches clean, not leaving trash, using less plastic, turning off bright lights near turtle beaches at night, and following rules that protect turtles.

Fun facts:

  • Baby turtles usually hatch at night and race to the sea.
  • Some sea turtles travel thousands of miles across the ocean.
  • Many female turtles come back to the same beach where they were born to lay their eggs.

Easy activity: Draw a timeline showing 110 million years and mark where sea turtles fit. Or make a paper sea turtle and write one thing you can do to help them. Talk about your drawing with a grown-up or a classmate!
