Can you feed bats in Minecraft?
Short answer: No. In plain (vanilla) Minecraft bats do not eat food, they cannot be fed, tamed, or bred. They are ambient animals that just hang out in dark caves.
What bats do
- They hang on ceilings in dark places.
- If you disturb them or turn on lights they will fly around for a while.
- They don’t follow you for food and they don’t drop anything when killed.
How to have bats near you (easy ways)
In Survival mode
- Go into caves or dig down underground where it is dark. Bats like dark places.
- Leave the light low (don’t place torches everywhere) and they may spawn and hang from the ceiling.
- If you want a few to stay in one place, build a small dark room with a ceiling for them to hang on and close it so they don’t fly away as easily.
In Creative mode (super easy)
- Open your inventory and find the "Bat Spawn Egg."
- Right-click (or tap) on the ground to spawn a bat whenever you want one.
Using commands
If you have cheats enabled, you can type: /summon bat ~ ~ ~ to create a bat right where you stand.
If you really want a pet bat
Minecraft doesn’t let you tame bats without mods or data packs. If you want a bat as a pet, either use a mod that adds taming or spawn bats in Creative and keep them in a safe glass room so they can’t fly away.
Quick tips
- Don’t try to feed them — it won’t work.
- Be careful with torches and light — bats will move when the area is bright.
- If you are curious, try Creative mode to play with as many bats as you like.
Have fun exploring caves and watching bats fly — they’re fun little helpers for making the world feel spooky and alive!
