At thirteen, the student finishes the year with the kind of warm, confident flourish that makes a teacher’s heart sing. In the Pythagorean C-scale unit (ACARA v9 aligned Musical Ratios), they moved from steady curiosity to a proficient—at times exemplary—understanding of ratio-based tuning. Beginning with middle C (261.63 Hz) and the monochord, they fluently computed halves and thirds, recognising the octave at 523.26 Hz and the gentle warmth of a 2:3 G at 174.42 Hz. Their worksheet was meticulous: applying multiply/divide-by-2 adjustments, keeping all pitches within the C octave, and accurately populating the Pythagorean C-scale. Conceptual clarity and neat calculations showed sound numeracy and musical reasoning; a confident, evidence-based accomplishment aligned to ACARA v9 Music outcomes.
At the keyboard our work was a delicious, slow-baked evolution. Using Piano Adventures A‑C‑E pedagogy alongside The Developing Artist (Hanon‑Faber) they achieved exemplary progress as an early-intermediate transitioning to solid intermediate (Levels 3A/3B). Technical routines now reflect efficient gesture and relaxed weight transfer; selected Hanon-derived warm-ups have polished dexterity and tone. Lessons balanced Analysis (form, harmony, rhythm), Creativity (improvised bridges, phrasing choices) and Expression (colour, narrative), producing performances that are secure, musically thoughtful and engaging.
I must also commend their growing musical literacy: staff notation fluency, rhythmic accuracy, aural discrimination and simple harmonic awareness all meet ACARA v9 expectations for this band. They show initiative in practise, setting achievable goals, and responding thoughtfully to feedback. With gentle encouragement to sustain daily short focused practice, and to explore improvisation within the ACE triangle, this student will continue to blossom into a musician who plays with intelligence and charm.
