Parts of the Farm (for a 7-year-old)

Today we will take a little tour of a farm and learn what each part is for. I will tell you what you might see, hear, or do in each place. Ready? Lets go!

1. Farmhouse porch

What it is: A small covered area in front of the house where people can sit and relax.

Who is there: The farmer's family and guests.

What you might do: Sit and drink lemonade, watch the animals, or wave to neighbors.

Sound or smell: You may hear birds or smell fresh air and flowers.

Safety tip: Always ask an adult before going inside the house.

2. Garden

What it is: A place where fruits, vegetables, and flowers grow. Gardens might have rows of plants and little paths.

Who is there: Plants, insects (like bees), and the gardener.

What you might do: Plant seeds, water young plants, pick ripe vegetables like tomatoes or carrots.

Fun activity: Plant a bean in a small cup and watch it grow day by day.

Safety tip: Wash your hands after touching soil or plants.

3. Poultry yard (chicken yard)

What it is: A fenced area where chickens, ducks, or turkeys live and scratch in the dirt.

Who is there: Hens, roosters, chicks, and maybe a duck.

What you might do: Count eggs, watch chicks peck, or listen to clucking.

Sound or smell: Lots of clucks and peeps; it can be a little smelly, so be careful.

Safety tip: Ask an adult before touching animals and wash hands afterward.

4. Barn

What it is: A big building that holds animals, hay, tools, and sometimes tractors.

Who is there: Cows, horses, goats, pigs, and the farmer when they feed animals.

What you might do: See animals get fed, look at hay bales, or hear the animals make sounds (moo, neigh).

Safety tip: Stay with an adult because barns can have big animals and heavy things.

5. Fields and orchards

What they are: Big open places where crops (like corn or wheat) grow, or rows of fruit trees (apples, peaches).

Who is there: Crops, sometimes wild birds, and the farmer with farm machines.

What you might do: Walk on the edge, pick fallen fruit with permission, watch machines during harvest.

Safety tip: Stay out of machines and dont walk into tall crops without an adult.

6. Pond or stream

What it is: A small lake or running water on the farm.

Who is there: Ducks, frogs, fish, and insects.

What you might do: Look for frogs or floating leaves, but never go near the water alone.

Safety tip: Always stay with an adult near water.

7. Silo and tractor shed

What they are: A silo stores grain or feed. A tractor shed keeps tractors and tools safe.

Who is there: Big machines and stored food for animals.

What you might do: Look at the big shapes, count wheels, or listen to engines from a safe spot.

Safety tip: Do not climb on machines or go into sheds without permission.

Simple 4-step farm visit plan

  1. Look: Look around and name each place you see (porch, garden, barn).
  2. Listen: Close your eyes and listen for animal sounds or wind in the trees.
  3. Help: Ask one small job you can do, like collecting eggs with an adult or watering a plant.
  4. Draw: Make a map or picture of the farm showing each part.

Fun activities you can do

  • Draw a farm map: Put the house, garden, barn, and pond where you think they belong.
  • Color a farm animal chart: Draw a cow, chicken, and horse and write their sounds.
  • Scavenger hunt: Find something red, something that grows, and something that clucks.

Mini quiz (try it!)

1. Where does a cow usually sleep? Answer: In the barn.

2. Where would you plant carrots? Answer: In the garden.

3. Where do chickens live? Answer: In the poultry yard or chicken coop.

Quick safety rules to remember

  • Always go with an adult.
  • Wash your hands after touching animals or soil.
  • Dont touch machines or climb on tall hay bales.
  • Ask before you pick fruit or enter a pen.

Thats the farm tour! If you want, you can draw your favorite part and tell me why you like it.
