Favorite Farm Places (for a 7-year-old)

Farms are full of fun places to visit. Here are some favorite spots, what you might find there, and simple, safe things you can do.

  1. Barn

What you see and hear: big doors, hay, maybe cows or horses, soft animal noises, boots on the floor.

Fun things to do: look at hay bales, watch animals eat, help sweep (with a grown-up).

Safety tip: always ask a grown-up before entering. Watch your feet and stay away from heavy equipment.

  2. Chicken Coop

What you see and hear: clucking, feathers, nests with eggs, little pecks.

Fun things to do: collect eggs (with help), gently watch chickens scratch for bugs, feed crumbs if allowed.

Safety tip: wash hands after touching chickens and be gentle so you don’t scare them.

  3. Vegetable Garden

What you see and smell: rows of plants, bright vegetables, fresh smells of dirt and plants.

Fun things to do: pick ripe veggies, pull small weeds, smell herbs like mint or basil.

Safety tip: only pick what a grown-up says is ready. Watch for thorns on some plants.

  4. Orchard (Fruit Trees)

What you see: apple, pear, or peach trees with fruit. You might hear birds in the branches.

Fun things to do: pick fruit (with a grown-up), taste a fresh piece, look for worms or ladybugs.

Safety tip: don’t climb trees without permission. Use a picker tool or adult help for high fruit.

  5. Pond or Creek

What you see and hear: frogs, ducks, water, splashes, reeds.

Fun things to do: watch tadpoles, look for insects, skip stones with an adult nearby.

Safety tip: never go near water alone. Always have a grown-up with you and stay on the bank.

  6. Pasture or Meadow

What you see: open grass, cows or sheep grazing, butterflies, tall grasses.

Fun things to do: run in the open space, look for wildflowers, count animals in the field.

Safety tip: keep a safe distance from big animals and close the gate behind you if you open it with permission.

  7. Hayloft

What you see and smell: stacks of hay that smell sweet and dry, soft places to sit.

Fun things to do: jump a little on a safe pile (with an adult watching), make a comfy nest for a reading break.

Safety tip: be careful of loose edges and watch for dust. Ask before climbing up.

  8. Farmyard / Tractor Area

What you see: tractors, tools, barns, and busy workers.

Fun things to do: look at big machines from a safe distance, ask the farmer how they work, pretend to drive a toy tractor.

Safety tip: stay away from moving machines and listen to the farmer’s rules.
