Super Duper REDSTONE Door + Zombie Lava Trap (for an 8‑year‑old)
Hi! This is a simple, fun guide to make a cool 2x2 piston door and a trap that drops zombies into lava. I’ll explain materials, steps, pictures with letters, and tips to test safely. Try building in Creative first so nothing goes wrong!
What you need (materials)
- Sticky Pistons ×4 (for the 2x2 door)
- Regular Pistons ×0 (not needed here)
- Redstone Dust
- Redstone Repeaters ×2–4
- Redstone Torches (optional)
- Tripwire Hooks ×2 (for the zombie detector) or Pressure Plates ×2
- String (connects the tripwire hooks)
- Trapdoor(s) or blocks that can be pulled by pistons
- Lava bucket (for the lava pit)
- Building blocks (stone, wood, etc.)
- Hopper + Chest (optional, if you want to collect drops)
Part A — Super Duper 2x2 Piston Door (basic hidden door)
This makes a door that opens as a 2x2 hole in the wall.
- Make a 2x2 hole in a wall where you want the door to be (2 blocks wide, 2 blocks tall).
- On each side of the hole, place two sticky pistons stacked one above the other facing the hole (so 4 sticky pistons total). They will push the two door blocks into the hole.
- Put the door blocks (the blocks that will fill the hole) on the sticky pistons so they face the hole.
- Behind the pistons, run redstone dust to power them. Because the pistons are on both sides, you will need repeaters to make delays and make both pairs move together. Place a repeater on each side line so the timing matches (try 2 ticks to start).
- Add a button, lever, or pressure plate to the redstone line that will open the door. If you want the door to open automatically when you step on a pressure plate, place plates in front of the door.
Top view (simple layout): [Block][Door][Door][Block] [Pist][Door][Door][Pist] Where Pist = sticky piston behind door blocks. Redstone lines run behind the Pist blocks and connect to a button or pressure plate.
Troubleshooting: If the pistons move wrong, use repeaters to delay one side a little until both sides match and the door doesn’t leave gaps.
Part B — Zombie Trap: Tripwire opens a trapdoor to drop them into lava
This trap uses tripwire hooks and a trapdoor above a pit of lava. When a zombie walks through the tripwire, the trapdoor opens and the zombie falls into lava (= it will burn).
Step-by-step trap build
- Dig a 1x2 or 2x2 pit where the zombie will fall. At the bottom, put lava so it fills the pit. (Tip: Put a block so lava can’t flow out into your hallway — lava flows can be dangerous.)
- Cover the pit with trapdoor blocks (these are on the floor). When closed, mobs walk over them like normal floor blocks.
- Make sure the trapdoor is powered by redstone when you want it open. In Bedrock, trapdoors open with a redstone signal.
- In the corridor where zombies will walk, place two tripwire hooks across from each other and connect them with string (so a tripwire line runs across the path). When a mob passes through the string, it activates the hooks.
- Connect redstone dust from one tripwire hook to the trapdoor (you might need to run redstone along the wall or under the floor). If the distance is long, add repeaters to carry the signal further.
- Tripwire hook -> redstone dust -> repeater(s) if needed -> trapdoor (redstone input)
- Test the trap: Put a zombie (or stand in Survival at night) and walk through the tripwire. The trapdoor should open for a second and the mob will fall into the lava.
Side view example: Corridor floor: [ ] [T] [ ] <- T = trapdoor covering pit Tripwire across the corridor a little before the trapdoor When string is activated, trapdoor receives redstone signal and opens. Top view of tripwire: Wall STRING Wall H ------- s ------- H H = Tripwire hook, s = string
Important tips for the lava trap
- Lava destroys mob drops. If you want to keep zombie drops, put the drop area over hoppers and a chest instead of lava, and kill mobs with fall damage or pistons.
- Test in Creative mode first. That way you can fix wiring without danger.
- Make sure the lava is contained and can’t flow into your base. Put signs, glass, or blocks to stop the lava flow.
- If the trapdoor opens for too short a time, add a redstone repeater (set to more ticks) between the tripwire and trapdoor so the door stays open long enough for the mob to fall.
Extra ideas to make it "Super DUPER"
- Add a secret button hidden behind a painting to open your 2x2 door.
- Use a redstone lamp and redstone torch to show when the trap is ready.
- Add pressure plates that only mobs trigger (stone plates will work) so you don’t fall in yourself.
- Use an observer for fancy triggers (advanced) — but tripwire is easiest for mobs.
Quick recap (super short)
- Build a 2x2 piston door with 4 sticky pistons and redstone wiring.
- Make a pit with lava and cover with trapdoor.
- Use tripwire hooks + string to detect zombies and send redstone signal to open trapdoor.
- Test in Creative and contain your lava so it’s safe for your base.
Have fun building! If you want, tell me where in your base you want the door and I can draw a small map for exactly how to place the redstone for that spot. ☺️
