Hi! Let's make some fun trapdoor traps in Minecraft Bedrock (for an 8-year-old)

Trapdoors are great because they look like normal floor blocks but can open and close. Below are easy, safe, step-by-step traps you can build. Always be kind and ask friends before trapping them!

Quick: How to get trapdoors

  • Wooden trapdoor: craft with 6 wooden planks in a crafting table (gives 2 trapdoors).
  • Iron trapdoor: craft with 4 iron ingots (gives 1 iron trapdoor). Iron trapdoors need redstone or buttons to open.

1) Simple Hidden Pitfall (manual)

This is the easiest. You hide a hole with trapdoors that look like normal floor. When someone steps on it, you open it and they fall into a pit.

Blocks:
  • 6–10 trapdoors (wooden)
  • Dirt/stone to make the pit
  • Optional: ladder or water at the bottom so you can get out
  1. Dig a hole 3–5 blocks deep.
  2. Put trapdoors across the top so they look like the floor (place them flat so they are flush with the ground).
  3. Hide the trapdoors with a carpet or leaves if you want them to be extra sneaky (carpet sits on top of trapdoor).
  4. When a mob or player walks over the trapdoor, open it by hand so they fall in. Close it again to reset.

Tip: Put a ladder or water column down the pit so you can get back out easily.

2) Automatic Pressure-Plate Trap (auto)

This uses a pressure plate to open the trapdoor automatically when someone steps on it.

Blocks:
  • Trapdoor (wooden or iron — iron needs a button/lever or redstone signal)
  • Pressure plate (wooden or stone)
  • Redstone dust (a few pieces)
  • Blocks to hide the wiring (dirt/stone)
  1. Dig a small hole where you want the trap to drop someone.
  2. Place the trapdoor as the floor over the hole.
  3. Place a pressure plate a block or two away where the player will step.
    • For a basic setup, put the pressure plate next to the trapdoor and run redstone dust from the pressure plate to the trapdoor.
  4. Hide the redstone under blocks or carpet so it isn’t obvious.
  5. When someone steps on the plate, the trapdoor will open and they will fall in. It will close again when the plate resets.

Tip: Use a wooden pressure plate to trigger on mobs and players, or a stone plate if you want only players to trigger it.

3) Water Drowning / Catch Trap (works well for mobs)

This trap uses water and trapdoors to move mobs into a small area where they can’t escape easily.

Blocks:
  • Trapdoors (4–6)
  • Blocks to form a small pen
  • Bucket of water
  • Optional: fence gate or door to keep you safe while you watch
  1. Make a small 3x3 or 4x4 pen.
  2. Place trapdoors on the top edge in a way that mobs might try to walk over them or be pushed by water into the pen.
  3. Pour water so it pushes mobs toward one corner of the pen where there is a lowered area (the trap). When they reach the corner, open the trapdoor and they fall into a small pool below.
  4. Close the trapdoor to keep the mob inside. You can use the trapped mob for a mob farm or just to keep them safe until you decide what to do.

Tip: Use signs or fence posts to stop water from flowing where you don’t want it, but still let mobs be pushed.

Extra Fun Tricks and Safety

  • Disguises: cover trapdoors with carpets, leaves, or slabs so they look normal.
  • Reset: always make a way to get out of your trap (ladder, water, or a hidden lever) so you don’t get stuck.
  • Be kind: don’t trap other players without asking. Surprises are fun when everyone knows it’s for play.
  • Practice in Creative mode if you want to try ideas without losing items.

Have fun building! If you want, tell me which trap you want to build and I can give step-by-step pictures made of blocks (like a tiny map) so it's even easier to follow.
