Who was Shah Jahan?

Shah Jahan was a powerful Mughal emperor who ruled much of India long ago. He was born in 1592 and died in 1666. He loved beautiful buildings and art, and he is most famous for building the Taj Mahal.

Step-by-step story of his life

  1. Early life: He was born into the Mughal royal family and learned about managing a kingdom and about war, art, and culture as he grew up.
  2. Becoming emperor: In 1628, Shah Jahan became the emperor after his father and a time of fighting for the throne. As emperor, he made important decisions about the whole country.
  3. Love and loss: His favorite wife was Mumtaz Mahal. They were very close. When Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631 after giving birth, Shah Jahan was heartbroken.
  4. Building the Taj Mahal: To remember Mumtaz Mahal, Shah Jahan decided to build a very beautiful tomb made of white marble. This is the Taj Mahal in Agra. It took many years and many workers to finish.
  5. Other buildings: He also built parts of the Agra Fort and the Red Fort in Delhi. He wanted grand palaces, gardens, and strong forts that also looked beautiful.
  6. The end of his rule: Later, one of his sons, Aurangzeb, fought him for the throne. Aurangzeb won and kept Shah Jahan imprisoned in a part of the Agra Fort. Shah Jahan spent his last years there and died in 1666. He was buried next to Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj Mahal.
