Moon craters are like little dents or holes found on the surface of the moon, and they come from things hitting the moon. Imagine if you were playing with a ball and threw it at sand; it would create a small hole in the sand, right? The same thing happens with the moon.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Space Rocks: Out in space, there are lots of rocks and pieces of metal called meteoroids. Sometimes, these meteoroids zoom around and collide with the moon.
  2. Big Hits: When these meteoroids hit the moon at super-fast speeds, they smash into it and create craters. Depending on how big the meteoroid is and how fast it hits, the crater can be tiny or really, really big!
  3. No Air to Slow Down: Unlike Earth, the moon doesn’t have a thick atmosphere with air. On Earth, when a meteoroid comes, the air slows it down, and sometimes it burns up before hitting the ground. But on the moon, there’s almost no air, so meteoroids crash into it without being slowed down.
  4. Old and New: Some craters are very old, while others are new. Over time, new meteoroids keep hitting the moon and adding to its many craters!

So, moon craters are really cool marks made by space rocks hitting the moon, and they tell us a lot about what’s happening in space!
