What Are Moon Craters?

The Moon is the big, bright rock we see in the night sky. If you look closely, you’ll see it has lots of holes in it. These holes are called craters!

How Do Craters Form?

Craters form when something big and fast hits the Moon. Imagine you throw a rock into a still pond. The splash it makes is like a crater! When a comet or asteroid (which is a really big rock in space) hits the Moon, it makes a hole, and that’s how a crater is born!

Why Are There So Many Craters?

The Moon doesn’t have air like we do on Earth, so nothing can blow the craters away, and the craters stay there for a very long time! On Earth, weather and plants can cover up holes, but on the Moon, the craters just keep adding up!

Fun Fact!

Some craters are really big, and some are very small, just like how some rocks are big and some are small! And, because the Moon doesn’t change much, we can still see all the craters that have formed over millions of years!
