Intent: I will guide my 14-year-old through a focused six-week summer program that continues this year’s Pythagorean tuning studies and advances violin technique using Jamie Chimchirian’s The Violin Method for Beginners, Book 1. Weekly goals: 1) Reinforce Pythagorean C scale and interval ratios with daily 15-minute theory drills and weekly video monochord demonstrations; 2) Transfer tuning concepts to the violin by comparing Pythagorean intervals to equal temperament using open strings and simple melodies; 3) Progress through Book 1 exercises—bow hold, first positions, simple scales, and Etudes—targeting 2–3 pages per week; 4) Weekly workshops (45 minutes) combining technique, ear training, and guided improvisation to hear and correct Pythagorean intervals on the instrument. Materials: monochord videos, tuner, recording device, Book 1, metronome. Assessment: weekly recordings, rubric for intonation, rhythm, tone, and theoretical understanding. Success indicators: accurate singing/playing of Pythagorean fifths and fourths, smooth shifts, steady bowing, and completion of Book 1 by summer’s end. Role of parent/teacher: coach, metronome-wielder, stern encourager, and celebrant of clear progress. Daily schedule: 20 minutes theory, 25 minutes technique, 15 minutes repertoire, plus twice-weekly 60‑minute workshop with recorded feedback. Expect measurable improvement, discipline, and joy. Parent will log progress daily and adjust pacing with empathy and firmness.
