Pre-unit report (Age 13): This beginner homeschool unit introduces proportional reasoning, measurement and sound through music, emphasising the 2:1 frequency ratio (octave) and Pythagoras’s monochord discovery. Learning outcomes (ACARA v9 aligned): describe pitch as a function of vibration frequency, use ratio notation, label monochord diagrams, and connect historical context to musical practice. Activities: monochord demonstration, frequency measurements, Cornell notes, guided summary writing, and composing an Ally McBeal cadence to apply interval relationships. Assessment for proficient/exemplary: accurate diagram labelling, precise use of scientific and musical terminology, clear ratio explanations, neat Cornell notes, concise summary and a short written justification linking halving string length to an octave. Exemplary work shows insightful interdisciplinary connections (history/science/music), correct ratio notation, and musical application in the cadence. This foundation supports future composition, analysis and performance. Timing, measurement accuracy and reflective self-assessment will be recorded to demonstrate growth toward higher achievement levels across the unit and feedback.
