What is Perimeter?

The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. You can think of it as the 'fence' that goes around a yard. To find the perimeter of a rectangle, for example, you add up all the sides. If one side is 4 meters and the other is 3 meters, you add them up like this:

  • Perimeter = 4 + 3 + 4 + 3
  • Perimeter = 14 meters

What is Area?

The area is the space inside a shape. Imagine spreading out a blanket inside a room; the area is how much space that blanket covers. For a rectangle, you multiply the length and the width to find the area. Using the same rectangle as before, if one side is 4 meters and the other is 3 meters, you calculate the area like this:

  • Area = length x width
  • Area = 4 x 3
  • Area = 12 square meters

Why are They Important?

Understanding perimeter and area helps us in many ways! When building something, it's important to know how much material you need for the fence (perimeter) and how much space you have for activities (area). That way, you can plan things well!
