Understanding Verbs, Nouns, and Parts of Speech
Hey there! Let’s learn about some special words called nouns and verbs. These words help us talk and tell stories!
What is a Noun?
A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. For example:
- Person: Mom, Dad, or your friend.
- Place: School, park, or your house.
- Thing: Toy, ball, or book.
So, when you say, “The dog runs,” the word dog is a noun because it names an animal.
What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that tells what someone or something does or what happens. For example:
- Run: I run.
- Jump: The frog jumps.
- Play: We play together.
In our sentence “The dog runs,” the word runs is a verb because it tells what the dog is doing!
Putting It Together!
Every time you speak or write, you use nouns and verbs. They are part of something called parts of speech. Other parts of speech include:
- Adjectives: Words that describe nouns, like 'big' or 'blue.'
- Adverbs: Words that describe verbs, like 'quickly' or 'happily.'
So, when you say, “The big dog runs quickly,” you’re using nouns, verbs, and more parts of speech!
Let’s Practice!
