Ally’s Homeschool Report — Age 13
I’m delighted to report strong progress across two musical-mathematical units. Unit 1 (Pythagorean Scale): independently applied ratio reasoning to halve and two-thirds divisions, calculated frequencies from 261.63 Hz, and assembled the Pythagorean C scale. Unit 2 (Interval Ratios): with light support and little nudges, converted irrational interval quotients into rounded decimals, transformed decimals (terminating and repeating) back into simplified fractions, and produced interval ratios for every scale degree.
ACARA v9 alignment: Year 8 Mathematics — apply proportional reasoning; operate with fractions and decimals; use measurement units; Year 8 The Arts (Music) — explore pitch, scales and tuning systems.
Exemplary outcome: accurate Pythagorean scale and complete, correctly simplified interval ratios. Progression: from constructing ratios and frequencies (Unit 1) to precision rounding and algebraic fraction conversion (Unit 2), demonstrating deeper procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. Parent notes: continued practice, curious experiments on the monochord recommended and delightful musical discoveries.
