| Clause (cue) |
Notes (comic‑strip rhyme / plain fact) |
| 21 — Where & who? |
"O Steward! O steward! Pond and state — where ponds were kept, do not abate; enlarge the water, plump the fish, plant ponds where handy, that's the wish."
Plain fact:
- Role: Stewards — keep and enlarge fishponds.
- Place/setting: Our estates (ponds where they existed; new ponds where practicable).
|
| 34 — What & how (garum)? |
"By charter, seal and kitchen chart — garum and goods must mind their art; make it clean, make it neat, in every vat and briny treat."
Plain fact:
- Role: Stewards (those who make or oversee estate production) must ensure garum and other products are prepared with utmost cleanliness.
- Place/setting: Produced on our estates (where stewards supervise).
|
| 44 — Lent & fish: who sends what? |
"Two-thirds to us, two-thirds to keep — of Lenten fish from pond so deep; send them yearly, neat and swift, then tell us what remains in thrift."
Plain fact:
- Role: Stewards — must send two thirds of Lenten food (including fish) each year for the ruler's use and report by letter what is left over.
- Place/setting: Lenten food on our estates (fish counted as Lenten food).
|
| 45 — Who to keep nearby? |
"Keep fishermen by brook and bay, net‑makers too — make them stay; in the district skilled and true, for hauling fish and nets anew."
Plain fact:
- Roles: Fishermen and net-makers must be present in the steward's district.
- Place/setting: Districts of the estates (stewards ensure these workmen are available).
|
| 62 — What to report (fish list)? |
"Account, account at Christmas tide — list the ponds and fishermen beside; fishponds, catch, each net and fee, send it up the festive tree."
Plain fact:
- Role: Stewards — must include fishponds and fishermen in the annual income statement and send it to the ruler at Christmas.
- Place/setting: Fishponds and the estates (reported in the district summaries).
|
| 65 — Sell, restock, who benefits? |
"Fish from ponds — sell and swap, keep the supply and mind the crop; when we do not come to see, sell some off and make a fee."
Plain fact:
- Role: Stewards — may sell fish from the fishponds (especially when the ruler does not visit) and must restock so there is always a supply; stewards obtain profit for the ruler's benefit.
- Place/setting: Fishponds on our estates (manage supply and sale when ruler is absent).

Tip: These rows are formatted Cornell‑style: left column = cue (clause number + question), right column = notes (comic rhyme + plain facts). Cut into cards along the rows for quick study. All roles and places above come only from clauses 21, 34, 44, 45, 62 and 65 and concern fish, fishponds and garum.
