Ally McBeal-style Comic Strip: Fish Rules from the Capitulare de Villis
Characters: Ally–type daydreaming steward (Stew), The King/Queen (Royal), a sassy talking Fish, and a nervous Accountant (Acct). Add a cheesy harp sound effect whenever the Fish appears.
Royal (holding a big scroll): "Stew, I want our estates to be useful to us — and tidy!"
Stew (taking notes): "Yes Your Majesty!"
Fish (popping out of a tiny pond, sparkles and harp noise): "Keep me! Make me bigger if you can!"
Stew: "We will keep old ponds and build new ones where sensible."
Acct (counting scrolls): "During Lent we send two-thirds of certain foods — and that includes fish — to the palace."
Fish (winking): "We’re important for religious days!"
Accounting ledger floats in the air: "Fishponds are listed in the yearly income report — they're valuable!"
Stew: "We must record fishpond output with everything else."
Fish (wearing sunglasses): "Sell me if you must — but put new fish back so the pond never runs out!"
Stew (practical): "When the ruler isn't visiting, sell some fish for profit — but always restock so supply stays steady."
Stew: "We must keep good fishermen and make quality preserved foods (even fish sauce)."
Fish (concerned): "Keep us and make things clean — no rotten garum!"
Royal: "Record fishpond income, sell smartly, restock, and keep everything clean and counted."
Acct (saluting): "Yes, Majesty — recorded at Christmas and kept in the annual report."
How to use this in your ACARA V9 open-book English exam (quick steps)
- Identify the fish-related rules in the text (look for Rules 21, 34, 44, 45, 62, 65 and any lines mentioning "fishponds").
- Paraphrase each rule in your own words — like our comic panels. Short, clear sentences earn marks.
- Quote one short line from the Capitulare to support each main point (you have the open book/dictionary). Cite rule numbers.
- Explain the purpose briefly: e.g., the ruler wants steady food, income and well-run estates — show how fish rules help that.
- Finish with one short evaluation sentence: e.g., "The fish rules show the ruler’s focus on resources, income and religious needs (Lent)."
Exam tip: For ACARA V9, write clearly, use evidence (short quotes), and keep your summary organized — headings or numbered points are great.
End panel: Fish swims off, singing (harp sound): "Keep me stocked, keep me clean, and I’ll feed the court — scene!"
