Ally McBeal Cadence: Fishponds — Open‑Book ACARA English Exam (Age 13)

Instructions: Read the Capitulare de Villis excerpt (especially clauses 21, 62 and 65). You may use the document and a dictionary. Write neatly. Total: 60 marks. Time: 60 minutes. Keep a playful, rhythmic tone — short lines, a legal wink, an Ally McBeal beat.

  1. Close reading & evidence (12 marks)
Read clauses 21 and 65. In 40–60 words, summarise what the steward must do with fishponds. Quote one short phrase from the text (write the clause number). Marking: 4 marks summary, 4 marks correct quote, 4 marks explanation of why the steward must do this.
  2. Advice column — "Dear Steward" (18 marks)
A steward writes to your advice column: "My fishponds are drying; villagers are stealing fish; I must sell fish for profit when the court is absent." In 120–150 words, write a quirky Ally McBeal‑style reply advising him. Your reply must: (a) give three practical steps he should take, (b) include at least two direct references to the Capitulare (use clause numbers), and (c) keep a playful voice. Marking: 10 marks content, 4 marks use of evidence, 4 marks tone and clarity.
  3. Flowchart skills — create & explain (20 marks)
Draw a flowchart (paper or digital) that maps the steward's decision process for fishpond maintenance and sales. Include these elements: Start, decision diamonds for "Is the court visiting?" and "Is water level sufficient?", processes titled "Repair pond", "Restock fish", "Sell surplus", and End. Show at least one loop (repeatable action). Submit the flowchart and then in 40–60 words explain one loop and how it prevents stock loss. Marking: 12 marks for correct structure and logic, 6 marks for labels and symbols, 2 marks for creativity and clarity. Bonus +2 marks for humorous labels that still make sense.
  4. Hypothetical problem‑solving (10 marks)
Scenario: Two days before Palm Sunday (clause 28) a pollutant kills half the fish. List, in order, five actions the steward should take to minimise loss and obey the Capitulare. Each action must be one short sentence. Marking: 5 marks correct sequence, 5 marks justification linked to the text.
  5. Compare & Critique (10 marks)
In 80–100 words, compare the Capitulare's rules on fishponds (clauses 21 and 65) with one modern idea about fisheries or environmental management (for example: restocking, pollution controls, licence rules). Conclude with one sentence saying whether the medieval rule seems fair or not, and why. Marking: 6 marks analysis, 4 marks clarity and use of evidence.

Tips for success: Use clause numbers when you quote. For the flowchart, diamonds = decisions, rectangles = actions, arrows show the order. Be precise: the exam rewards steps, evidence and clear sequence. Keep your Ally McBeal cadence — short lines, a playful aside, then the lawlike line. Good luck, steward‑scholar!
