How to use these Cornell-style flashcards

Each card has two columns: left (cue) = short clause number + quirky legal advice or question; right (notes) = places/settings & roles mentioned in the clause, a tiny Ally McBeal–style lyric summary, and a "Think like a mini-lawyer" question to apply the rule. Read the left side, then see if you can answer before checking the right side.

Clause 21
"Fish & Fishponds — Pond patrol rule!"
Quirky tip: Who checks the pond so the royal table gets fish?
Places / Settings / Roles:
  • Fishponds, streams, manor lands
  • Fisherman, pond-keeper, steward, cook
Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:

"Keep the pond neat, keep the nets tight — save the king's supper for Christmas night!"

Think like a mini-lawyer Q:

If the pond-keeper notices fewer fish than usual, who must be told first and what should they check (water, nets, predators)? List two steps the steward should order.

Clause 62
"Fisherman Duties — Keep the catch fair and recorded!"
Quirky tip: Who brings in fish and who writes it down?
Places / Settings / Roles:
  • Manor shorelines, boats, kitchen stores
  • Fishermen, stewards, reeve (local manager), pantry clerk
Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:

"Net in the morning, ledger by the night — every fish counted, every portion right."

Think like a mini-lawyer Q:

A fisherman brings in 30 fish but the ledger only shows 20. What questions should the steward ask to find out why? Name two possible explanations and what record checks you'd order.

Clause 45
"Steward Responsibilities — Keeper of rules and supplies!"
Quirky tip: Who keeps everything running and who reports to the lord?
Places / Settings / Roles:
  • Manor house, storerooms, cellar, kitchens
  • Steward (chief manager), pantry staff, guards, laborers
Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:

"Steward in a rush, ledger in a whirl — keep the manor fed, keep the flags unfurled."

Think like a mini-lawyer Q:

The steward must plan food for a feast and save stores for winter. What two records should the steward check first and why? What rule would you write to prevent running out of grain?

Clause 65
"Christmas Provisions — Make the feast fair and legal!"
Quirky tip: Who gets the special meat and how is it shared?
Places / Settings / Roles:
  • Great hall, kitchens, royal pantry, servants' quarters
  • Cook, steward, lord, household members, guests
Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:

"Deck the hall, carve the boar — share with the poor, but log it in lore."

Think like a mini-lawyer Q:

At Christmas, the steward must set aside special food for nobles and ordinary staff. How would you divide a set amount of meat between lord, household, and guests? Propose a fair rule and explain your reasoning.

Quick study tip: Read the left cue out loud like a lawyer giving silly advice, then answer the mini-lawyer question before reading the notes. That helps you remember both the rule and who it affects.
