How to use these Cornell-style flashcards: Left column = cue (clause number + a quirky hint/question). Right column = short notes: places/roles mentioned, a tiny Ally McBeal–style lyric to make it memorable, and a mini-lawyer question to think about.

Cue (Clause + Quirky Advice / Question) Notes (Places, Roles, Ally lyric + mini-lawyer Q)
Clause 21 — Pond Power!
(Keep the fish flowing: build or enlarge ponds?)
  • Places / settings: Fishponds on royal estates; new ponds where practicable.
  • Roles: Stewards who manage and expand ponds.
  • Ally lyric: "Make a pond, keep it neat — fish for the king, fresh and sweet!"
  • Mini-lawyer Q: If a steward finds a good spot for a new pond, what should they do first to follow Clause 21?
Clause 45 — Hire the Experts!
(Who must be on the team?)
  • Places / settings: Workshops and estate workshops; shore or pond-side work.
  • Roles: Fishermen, net-makers, bakers, smiths, brewers, carpenters, and many specialists the steward must keep.
  • Ally lyric: "Net-maker, fisherman, bring the catch — we keep the crew so the kitchen matches!"
  • Mini-lawyer Q: Why would a steward be ordered to keep a fisherman on staff instead of hiring each catch separately?
Clause 65 — Sell and Restock!
(What to do with fish when the king is away?)
  • Places / settings: Fishponds on estates, market or storage when sold.
  • Roles: Stewards who sell fish and restock ponds for continuous supply.
  • Ally lyric: "Sell a fish, earn a penny, plant a fry — keep the pond all shiny!"
  • Mini-lawyer Q: How can a steward prove they sold fish honestly and also replaced them so the pond stays full?
Clause 62 — Christmas Account Time!
(Report ALL income at Christmas — yes, the fish too!)
  • Places / settings: Royal court at Christmas; stewards' districts and records.
  • Roles: Stewards who send the annual statement listing income from ponds, mills, rents, mills, forests, fishponds, fishermen, etc.
  • Ally lyric: "Jingle bells, tally the wells — fish and grain, we write it plain!"
  • Mini-lawyer Q: What three pond-details should a steward include in the Christmas report so the king knows the pond is earning properly?

Quick study tips for a 13-year-old mini-lawyer: 1) Say the short lyric aloud to remember the rule. 2) Answer the mini-lawyer Q in one sentence to check you understand. 3) Draw a tiny pond and label who cares for it — steward, fisherman, market.
