How to use these Cornell flashcards

Read the left cue (clause number + quirky question). Try to answer from memory. Then check the right note column for short facts, a fun Ally McBeal–style lyric, and a mini-lawyer question to think about.

21 — Keep the ponds full!
Quirky advice/question:
Where should stewards keep or build fishponds — and why?
Places / roles: Fishponds on royal estates, stewards who manage them, sites where ponds already existed and new practicable places.

Ally McBeal lyric (tiny song): "Stock the pond, make it wide — steward's promise, king's fishy pride!"

Think like a mini‑lawyer Q: If you were the steward, what three things would you check before creating a new fishpond (location, water source, who will care for it)?

62 — Christmas accounts (bring your list!)
Quirky advice/question:
What must stewards report at Christmas and why is this important?
Places / settings / roles: Every estate's income sources: oxen, plough services, pigs, rents, mills, forests, bridges, ships, markets, vineyards, hay, timber, gardens, fishponds, craftsmen (fishermen, smiths), poultry and many more — the steward compiles the yearly statement and sends it at Christmas.

Ally McBeal lyric (tiny song): "Count the cows, the coins, the fish — Christmas list makes the king’s wish!"

Think like a mini‑lawyer Q: Name five different kinds of income the steward must include in the Christmas report. (Hint: include one animal, one craft, one crop, one building source, and fish.)

45 — Hire the right team
Quirky advice/question:
Who should every steward keep on hand to run an estate well?
Places / roles: Skilled workmen on the estate: blacksmiths, gold/silver‑smiths, shoemakers, carpenters, shield‑makers, fishermen, net‑makers, falconers, brewers, bakers, soap‑makers, and many other craftsmen and specialists.

Ally McBeal lyric (tiny song): "Got a smith and a baker, and a net for the line — steward’s little band keeps the manor fine!"

Think like a mini‑lawyer Q: Pick two craftsmen from the list. Explain one way each helps keep the estate healthy and loyal to the king (example: net‑maker helps fish supply, blacksmith maintains tools and weapons).

65 — Sell fish, but don’t forget to restock
Quirky advice/question:
When can stewards sell fish and what must they do afterward?
Places / roles: Stewards manage fishponds, may sell fish (especially when the king is not visiting) but must replace sold fish so ponds always have a supply; stewards also earn profit for the king from sales.

Ally McBeal lyric (tiny song): "Catch a sale when the court’s away — but restock the pond by break of day!"

Think like a mini‑lawyer Q: If a steward sold all the fish and didn’t restock, which clause would he break and what would you tell him to do to fix it (two quick steps)?

Study tip: Cover the right column and use only the left cue to quiz yourself. Then flip and answer the mini‑lawyer question out loud to practice explaining the rule, like a real steward in front of the king.
