How to use these Cornell-style flashcards (short)

Study steps for a 13-year-old: 1) Read the left cue aloud. 2) Try to say the right-side notes from memory (use the Ally lyric to help). 3) Answer the mini-lawyer Q out loud like a tiny royal steward. 4) Repeat and color-code (blue for water, green for money, pink for people!)

Left (Cue): Clause 21 — "Keep & Grow the Fishponds?" (Legal fish-care tip)

Right (Notes):
  • Places / settings: royal estates' fishponds, manor waters, places suitable for new ponds.
  • Roles: stewards, fishkeepers, pond-builders.
  • Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:
  • "Fill the pool, make it shine — steady fish for the royal dine; pond today, pond tomorrow, steward keeps away the sorrow."
  • Mini-lawyer Q: If a steward finds an old pond empty or a good place for one, what should they do and why? (Hint: food, steady supply, and estate value.)

Left (Cue): Clause 62 — "Christmas Accounting?" (Send the annual income list at Christmas)

Right (Notes):
  • Places / settings: all estates, mills, forests, bridges, markets — and yes, the fishponds are on the list.
  • Roles: stewards (who compile the lists), royal accountants, messengers to the king at Christmas time.
  • Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:
  • "At Christmas bring the ledger bright — fish and flour, ox and light; tell the king what each pond yields, every coin from our fields."
  • Mini-lawyer Q: Why must fishpond income be listed at Christmas, and what might happen if a steward forgets to include it?

Left (Cue): Clause 45 — "Hire the Right Crew" (Which craftsmen must every steward keep?)

Right (Notes):
  • Places / settings: workshops, docks, kitchens, manor yards.
  • Roles: blacksmiths, gold/silversmiths, shoemakers, carpenters, fishermen, net-makers, brewers, bakers, soap-makers, falconers, and more.
  • Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:
  • "You need a baker, brewer, net-maker too — a fisherman to haul the day through; build the team, keep it tight, steward runs the manor right."
  • Mini-lawyer Q: Why does the list include fishermen and net-makers? How does having these craftspeople help the estate run smoothly and make the steward look good?

Left (Cue): Clause 65 — "Sell & Restock the Fish?" (Keep ponds profitable and full)

Right (Notes):
  • Places / settings: fishponds, market stalls, royal kitchen, estate cellars.
  • Roles: stewards (who sell and restock), fish-sellers, buyers, fishermen who catch and transfer fish.
  • Ally McBeal–style lyric summary:
  • "Sell a trout, plant two more — coin for now, fish for the store; when the king's away, make it pay, restock for another day."
  • Mini-lawyer Q: When is a steward allowed to sell fish from the pond, and what must they do after selling? Who benefits from the sale?

Quick study tips (two-minute memory tricks)

  • Color-code: blue for anything water/fish, green for money/taxes, orange for people/roles.
  • Use the Ally lyric (sing it softly!) to lock the idea — melody helps memory.
  • Answer the mini-lawyer Q like you are a steward reporting to the king — short sentence, one reason, one action.
